Flo Meditation + Wellness Case Study
I was approached by Autumn Grant and Jonathan Dododza to work on Halifax’s first modern meditation studio, Flo, in the summer of 2018. They had just signed a short-term lease and were looking to highlight the existing character of the space while creating a look and feel that was distinctly their own and could transfer easily to new locations in the future.
Branding for the space was being developed at the same time, which meant that I was able to collaborate closely with their graphic designer (and close friend of mine), Lizane Tan, in developing the brand’s colour palette and overarching look and feel.
The space was divided into three distinct areas: the meditation space, an office and community room, and a boutique.
Working with a tight timeline and budget, I introduced elements that could be moved and/or recreated in a new environment down the road, associated with the look and feel of the brand no matter where they go in the future. We chose to work with local makers and artisans wherever possible, from the creation of the studio’s meditation pillows, using various shades of green and sewn by Pamela Stone, to their boardroom table (which has a hidden Irish clover underneath) made by Autumn’s lifelong friend, Ronan Meagher. Photography and artwork used throughout the space were also created by local artists, like Hafiia Mira and Katelyn Morse. Autumn even created some original pieces for the gallery wall. Natural materials such as cotton, wood, and wool were used frequently throughout the space.
COLOUR PALETTE
We introduced both a primary colour palette and a secondary colour palette for the brand. The main brand colours are inspired by nature; sand, sage, and earth, while secondary accent colours introduce fun pops of colour for a young and more unexpected aesthetic.
Boutique plinths were painted in a gradient of Farrow & Ball eco-friendly colours, and a large circle was painted in the meditation space using a Benjamin Moore cloudy pink with brown and gray undertones, both complimenting the space’s exposed brick. An office gallery wall features the Flo logo surrounded by abstract shapes (painted by Lizane Tan) and is accompanied by prints and photos from local artists showcasing the full Flo spectrum.
